turkish prisoner POW beadwork trench art

One type of prisoner of war work that was peculiar to a particular nation’s prisoners was the beadwork made by Turkish prisoners.  They would make snakes up to 10 feet long from tightly compressed cloth, then sew individual glass beads to cover the surface, incorporating messages, usually ‘Turkish Prisoners’ and the year and sometimes the place – the red one in the centre of the picture was made on Cyprus, and brought back by the chap in the photo who was stationed at the camp.
